In the Event of a Chemical Emergency
How will I know?
You will be notified by a firefighter or police officer, or
information about the emergency will be announced on local
radio and TV stations.
What should I do?
- Go indoors and stay there.
- Turn on your radio or TV and listen for additional
instructions
- Notify any hearing-impaired or disabled persons in your
area of the emergency.
If evacuation is ordered by authorities:
- Stay calm. Pack basic things you and your family will need.
- Lock your house and tie a white cloth or towel on your
front door.
- Use your own vehicle if you can. Keep car windows and
vents closed. Turn on the car radio to hear instructions. if
you do not have your own transportation, ask a neighbor
or call the fire or police department.
- Along major routes, authorized personnel will direct you
out of the affected area and toward a reception area.
- Return to your home as soon as the emergency is
declared over by the authorities
If you are told to shelter in place:
- Close all windows and doors.
- Shut off all systems that draw air into the dwelling such
as furnaces, air conditioners, fireplace vents, and
dampers
- Stay tuned to local radio or TV stations for further
updates.
- If you must go outside, place a damp cloth or towel over
your nose and mouth.
- Bring pets inside.
- Seal cracks around windows with tape or wet towels.
- Do not use the phone unless you have a special
emergency and need help
- Schools will care for and protect children, do not contact
the school.
